Each year United Way of Eastern New Mexico works with community volunteers to make life better in Roosevelt County and Curry County. A Day of Caring is a day of volunteer activites that support projects that can be enjoyed by the public (like painting and cleaning parks) or projects that support the work of non-profits (like taking inventory and sorting donated items) or large scale projects that change neighborhoods (like building a playground).Want to volunteer through Day of Caring? Dream Center Project - Day of Caring in Portales

United Way, along with Comcast's Cares Day, selected the Dream Center in Portales as this year's Day of Caring project. They joined together to "finish out" the office and workroom space in the new Dream Center Building. A windstorm in November 2009 destroyed the old building. As a result, the Center had to stop serving families in need.

The Dream Center is a non-profit agency managed and supported by Victory Life Church along with donations from the community. The Dream Center is unique in Portales as it is the only agency that provides free food, clothing, blankets, and furniture to individuals in need.

Funds for the construction were raised through a raffle, sponsorships and donations with labor provided by numerous groups and friends of United Way and Comcast. Names of those who give $200 or more will be placed on a sign to be permanently displayed in front of the Dream Center Building.
